Severe cockling/waviness is observed running vertically in paper support. Insect activity is evidenced by presence of holes and losses in the paint which exposes the brown paper base.

Separation of paper base from the board was executed so that the painting could be treated individually. Since the paper base was glued to a poor-quality core board that was acidic in nature, by being in contact with it the base was also becoming acidic and brittle.

After complete removal of the board, the paper support from reverse shows that the painting is present on two sheets of paper – the lighter paper in central area and a darker one around it. Glue residue is seen as dark brownish patches in the lighter paper along its edges.

The painting is viewed in transmitted light and shows several small holes caused by insects and a couple of large missing areas of paper. The thickness variation in the different paper bases is also obvious.

The painting was provided a new lining of paper so that it is better supported. This procedure also had the benefit of easing out the creases making the paper base less wavy while preserving the character of the paint layer. The holes and losses have been filled with appropriate cellulose-based material.

Reintegration of the filled areas is the last stage in this conservation treatment plan so that the painting appears as an aesthetic whole entity.
