When the painting was received from a private collector, the portrait appeared flat, lifeless and uninteresting.

On closer examination it became apparent that the original aged paint layer was covered with a thick layer of new paint and subsequently cleaning was executed.

Cleaning and removal of the new blue paint in the background revealed a very stable paint layer of a completely different colour.

It was also obvious that new paint was present over the face of the painted portrait.

A completely-transformed benign countenance emerged when cleaning was accomplished making the entire portrait appear fresh.

A sensational discovery was made - removing the new paint brought to light the artist who had rendered it and affirmed that the painting was indeed 73 years old!
