The framed drawing had been in contact with moisture which had penetrated through the backing board and had been absorbed by all the layers within the frame – window cut mount, drawing, backing paper and backing board.

Fungal growth is seen here as a fuzzy cottony presence over the paper substrate. The trapped moisture combined with the warm micro-climate within the frame provided the ideal conditions for fungal growth.

The fungal growth resulted in the localized weakening and discolouration of the paper base. The fungal stains are seen as yellow to brown to black spots – the stain is caused by chemicals that are released by the fungus as by-products when it decomposes the paper.

Silverfish is seen within the frame thriving on paper that is broken down by fungus.
