The frame members had multiple holes and gaps which became the access points for insects. The environment within the frame proved ideal for their sustenance. As a result, there were numerous cobwebs, insect egg casings observed all over the painting.

The painting was removed from the frame and conservation treatment began by cleaning all the extraneous matter that was covering the paint surface which brought to light the skillfully-created, breathtakingly beautiful painting.

The background blue area displayed several losses in the paint due to lack of adhesion to the ground layer beneath the paint.

Consolidation of the entire area was carried out to improve the adhesion of the paint to the layer beneath and also prevent any further loss. The missing areas of paint were reintegrated using appropriate colours that rendered the painting complete.

Minor superficial losses in the paint layer (for instance, over the lady’s countenance) were observed which could have been the result if the paint layer was wiped down when it was temporarily damp.

The images were restored by incorporating the details evident in the painting and also following the same style in the painting which results in a seamlessly unspoiled image.

The frame was suitably modified and all gaps in the frame were sealed and to facilitate the positioning of the painting comfortably within it. The conserved painting appeared as grand and exquisite as it would have been when it had been freshly painted.
